You can leave the car parked for most of a Burleigh stay. From The Village Burleigh on Park Avenue, this five-stop loop takes you out to the James Street shops, down to the patrolled beach, along the foreshore and around the headland, all within about a ten minute walk. Here is how to string it together on foot.
Where does the walk start? The James Street shops
Step out onto Park Avenue, turn along Connor Street and you reach James Street in about five minutes. This is Burleigh’s boutique strip, a slow browse of surf labels, homewares, bookshops and coffee windows. Start the morning here with a flat white and a look in the shops before the day warms up. Guests keep mentioning how easy it is to fill an hour just wandering, and it works as the natural first leg because everything else runs downhill from here toward the water. Open hours vary by store, but most trade from around 9am daily.
Need a coffee before the beach? Commune Cafe
A couple of minutes further along at 1844 Gold Coast Highway, Commune Cafe opens early and runs from 6am to 3.30pm seven days a week. It is an organic-leaning spot doing proper breakfasts, big salads and strong coffee, and it makes the ideal fuel stop before you head down to the sand. About a seven minute walk from our door, it suits early risers and families alike. Order the eggs and a batch brew, sit out the front, and watch Burleigh wake up. From here it is a short, flat stroll down to the beach end of the street.
Is the beach walkable from The Village? Goodwin Terrace
Follow Connor Street down toward the water and you hit Goodwin Terrace and the main Burleigh Heads beach in about nine minutes. This is the patrolled stretch, with flags up daily and the headland sheltering the southern end, which is why it stays calmer than the open beaches further north. Swim between the flags, then walk the grassy foreshore under the Norfolk pines toward Burleigh Point. It is the heart of the suburb, and on any given morning you will see swimmers, walkers and surfers all sharing the same patch of coast.
Fancy lunch on the sand? Rick Shores
Right where the foreshore meets the base of the headland, Rick Shores sits at 43 Goodwin Terrace with its tables almost on the beach, about a nine minute walk from The Village. It does contemporary Asian cooking and is best known for its Moreton Bay bug roll, which guests keep mentioning long after they leave. Lunch runs from around midday Tuesday to Sunday and dinner from 5.30pm, and booking ahead is wise for a window table. Price sits at the higher end, so this is the walk’s special-occasion stop, ideally timed for when your legs want a break.
What is the headland walk like? Burleigh Head National Park
At the end of Goodwin Terrace the sealed path lifts into Burleigh Head National Park, and this is the finale of the loop. The oceanfront circuit runs about 2.8 kilometres, roughly an hour at an easy pace, tracing the rocky coast past Tumgun Lookout where the view opens right down the coastline. Keep an eye out for the pandanus, the resident brush turkeys and, in season, whales offshore. The first stretch is flat and pram-friendly before it climbs, so you can go as far as suits you and simply retrace your steps back to The Village whenever you are ready.
